Lent to Easter – Gozo Philatelic Society

The Gozo Philatelic Society has prepared yet another exhibition titled Lent to Easter. This will be hosted by Il-Ħaġar Museum from Thursday 29 February 2024 until Monday 8 April 2024 at Level -1. Visitors can admire a variety of stamps portraying scenes ranging from Lent processions to Easter celebrations. The Museum’s opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 9:00-17:00. Entrance is free.

Harp & Wind Trio Recital

On Saturday, 2 March, Il-Ħaġar Museum will be hosting a recital by Noel Beck (clarinet), Fiorella Camilleri (flute) and Anne Marie Podestà (harp), who will be performing works by Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Faure, Bizet, and others.

The concert starts at 19:30 and entry is free. Seat reservations are recommended by sending an email to events@heartofgozo.org.mt

This recital forms part of the Ministry for Gozo and Planning’s initiative 𝐸𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝐺𝑜𝑧𝑜, and is supported by the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the same Ministry.

Military Units in Gozo in World War II

Il-Ħaġar Museum continues with its public lecture series on Saturday 9 March 2024 at 11:00. We are pleased to have Charles Bezzina lead us into the past of this island in his historical talk on military units in Gozo during the Second World War.

After the lecture you might wish to take a look at the current exhibitions being hosted at the Museum. Unknown Prescription reveals works by Mario Abela, Charles Balzan, and Justin Falzon. The exhibition explores ideas of transition, fragmentation, and the flesh, where paintings and photography dialogue with artefacts from the Museum’s permanent collection. This exhibition will remain open until 14 April 2024.

The documentary exhibition What’s in a bequest? The Archive of Mro Joseph Vella displays material from the Vella Music Archive and remains open until 24 March 2024. The exhibition can be viewed at Levels 1 & -1.

The 6th Joseph Vella Memorial Lecture & Inauguration of the Documentary Exhibition from Mro Joseph Vella Music Archive

Il-Ħaġar Museum is excited to start off its weekend of celebratory events commemorating the 11th anniversary of the inauguration of the Museum as well as the 6th anniversary of Mro Joseph Vella’s passing.

On Friday 23 February 2024 at 19:30, you are invited to attend the 6th Joseph Vella Memorial Lecture by Prof. James Corby titled Artifical Inspirations: Technology, the Arts and Us.  

Following is the inauguration of the documentary exhibition What’s in a bequest? The Archive of Mro Joseph Vella.  Material from the Vella Music Archive is to be exhibited until Sunday 24 March 2024.

11th Anniversary Celebratory Luncheon

Unknown Prescription – Catalogue Launch

The catalogue for the current collective temporary exhibition at Il-Ħaġar Museum, Unknown Prescription, number 28 in Il-Ħaġar Gems series, will be launched on Saturday 17 February 2024 at 11:00.  The 140 pages catalogue, edited by exhibition curator Austin Camilleri with Joseph Borg and Maria Frendo, includes reproductions of the exhibits as well as a range of write-ups.  The catalogue opens with a Foreward from Founder Mgr Joseph Farrugia and a detailed Curatorial Note by visual artist Austin Camilleri.  Philosophy lecturer Niki Young explores Mario Abela’s work. Creative producer Gabriel Zammit then deals with Charles Balzan. The third collective exhibitor Justin Falzon is discussed by Maria Frendo. Besides these essays, the volume also includes biographical notes of the three exhibitors.

The event is free of charge but seating reservations are to be requested via email to events@heartofgozo.org.mt.

The exhibition Unknown Prescription runs until 14 April.  Entrance to the Museum is Free.  Normal opening hours are 9am to 5pm seven days a week.

A Celebratory Weekend at Il-Ħaġar Museum

On 23rd February 2013 Il-Ħaġar – Heart of Gozo Museum was ceremoniously inaugurated as a Cultural Centre and a Community Space to spur intellectual inquiry in the region of Gozo.  In order to mark the 11th anniversary since its inception, a weekend of cultural and celebratory events has been prepared.  These events also commemorate the life and legacy of Joseph Vella on the 6th anniversary of his passing.
