Museum Curator Mgr Dr Joseph Farrugia announced that the fund-raising drive to cover the remaining expenses for the restoration of the historic Square Piano has been successful.
The Square Piano had been donated to Il-Ħaġar Museum two years ago by Prof. Mro Joseph Vella and earlier this year it was restored in Malta by brothers Anthony and Michael Spiteri. Its inauguration took place on Saturday, 25 June 2016, with a recital by top-student pianist Frances James Camilleri. This recital was held as an added event in the Victoria International Arts Festival that is currently unfolding.
Mgr Farrugia thanked the members of the Ladies Society for the €503 they garnered from the sale of home-baked pastry over the first weekend of June and the young friends of Il-Ħaġar for the organization of a lunch, held right after the Square Piano recital at St George’s Parish House with a profit of €650.
Mgr Farrugia thanked especially those who, though unable to join in the lunch, contributed generously to the cause.
It is hoped that the Square Piano, hitherto an unusable instrument, will continue to feature regularly in the cultural calendars of Gozo.
