A late 18th century thurible, also called “censor”, has been acquired for the Museum Il-Ħaġar | Heart of Gozo by its curator Mgr Joseph Farrugia with the support of a number of friends of the Gozitan Museum.
The large solid silver incense burner, 25.5 cm high (excluding the chain) and weighing 1200grams, was made in Turin, Italy, and is dated c. 1790.
The acquisition was made possible through the generosity of benefactors Eucharist Attard, Clementina Bezzina, Dr Noel Buttigieg Scicluna, Joe Cini, Fr Charles Cini SDB, Mgr Joseph Farrugia, Can. George J. Frendo, Ivan Galea, John Mercieca, architect Saviour Micallef, Dr Paul G. Pisani, John Vassallo (Australia) , Alda Haber (Canada) , Antonella Zammit, Frank Zammit of Kafe’ San Ġorġ, and Anthony Zammit.
Mgr Farrugia said that the censor acquired for the Museum will be formally presented to St George’s basilica whereby the church will obtain the right to use it for the celebration of solemn liturgies. The censer can be viewed at the Museum.
Il-Ħaġar | Heart of Gozo displays several works of art that have been donated or are on permanent loan, but this is the first objet d’art that has been purchased specifically on behalf of the Museum.
